Baseball Battles Fordham on Opening Day, Drops 14-10 Decision

CARY, N.C. – Juniors Gio Colasante and Jordan Kang each hit two home runs, but Harvard University baseball fell to Fordham University, 14-10, in its 2025 season opener on Friday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
 
Playing for the first time on the year, the Crimson (0-1) pulled ahead 10-8 in the bottom of the sixth after trailing 5-0 before the Rams (1-3) plated the contest's final six runs to take the decision.
 
Colasante went 2-for-5 with a home run, triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while competing for the first time since the 2023 season after missing the 2024 campaign due to injury. Kang finished 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs, and two runs scored while senior George Cooper and junior Max Lane each tallied two RBIs.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior Gio Colasante went 2-for-5 with a home run, triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored. He played for the first time since the 2023 season after missing the 2024 campaign due to injury. Colasante hit his first collegiate homer.
  • Junior Jordan Kang finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. He hit his third collegiate homer.
  • Senior George Cooper and junior Max Lane each tallied two RBIs.
  • First-year Liam Wilson posted a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Senior Matt Giberti added a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored.
  • On the mound, first-year left-hander Charley Bergsma totaled three strikeouts over 2.2 innings of relief in his collegiate debut, and sophomore right-hander Will Burns added three strikeouts over 1.2 innings of relief.
  • The Crimson lineup tallied nine hits and five walks on its way to a double-figure scoring total in the season opener. 
 

How It Happened

  • After Fordham plated five runs in the top of the second, Harvard responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to pull within 5-2 as sophomore Jack Rickeheim hit an RBI single, and senior George Cooper worked a walk to bring in another run.
  • Trailing 8-2 entering the bottom of the third, the Crimson plated three more runs to cut the deficit to 8-5. Junior Max Lane started the stanza's scoring with a sacrifice fly before junior Jordan Kang sent a two-run home run out to left field.
  • Harvard knotted the score at 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth as first-year Liam Wilson hit an RBI double prior to a two-run home run to left field from junior Gio Colasante.
  • The Crimson pulled ahead, 10-8, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cooper brought home a run with a sacrifice fly before Lane plated another with an infield single.
  • In the top of the seventh, Fordham re-gained an 11-10 advantage behind three runs.
  • The Rams added one run in the top of the eighth and two runs in the top of the ninth to move ahead, 14-10.
