CARY, N.C. – Sophomore right-hander
Truman Pauley struck out six batters over 6.0 innings in the start, but Harvard University baseball fell to the Big Ten's Northwestern University, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Continuing its opening weekend, the Crimson (0-2) permitted just three earned runs as a pitching staff before the Wildcats (3-1) took the decision.
Pauley tossed 6.0 innings in his first start of the season, allowing four runs – three earned – on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts while sophomore right-hander
Ryan McHugh (1.1 innings) and first-year left-hander
Luca Alagheband (1.2 innings, two strikeouts) did not permit an earned run in relief.

Jack Rickheim went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored while first-year
Gavin Smith hit an RBI double as a pinch hitter.

How It Happened
- Pauley kept the Wildcats scoreless through the first two frames, including striking out the side in the top of the first.
- The Wildcats opened the game's scoring with two runs in the top of the third and added two more runs in the top of the fifth to move ahead 4-0.
- Pauley did not allow a run in the sixth before McHugh tossed a one-two-three top of the seventh.
- Northwestern added one more run in the top of the eighth to take a 5-0 edge.
- The Crimson responded in the bottom of the eighth as Rickheim set the table with a double to right field. Smith then sent an RBI double down the right field line to plate Rickheim and bring Harvard within 5-1.
