Cooper, Kang Hit Homers, Baseball Falls to Indiana, 14-4

CARY, N.C. – Senior George Cooper and junior Jordan Kang each hit two-run home runs, but Harvard University baseball fell against Indiana University, 14-4, on Sunday morning at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
 
Competing in the final game of its opening weekend and facing a Big Ten opponent for the second straight day, the Crimson (0-3) pulled within 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth following Cooper and Kang's homers before the Hoosiers (2-4) plated the game's final six runs to hold on for the decision.
 
Cooper hit his first home run of the season and the seventh homer of his career while Kang launched his second homer of the weekend and fourth of his career. On the mound, junior Gio Colasante made his collegiate pitching debut, tallying four strikeouts over 2.0 innings.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior Jordan Kang went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, a run scored, and a walk. He notched his second homer of the weekend and his fourth career long ball with the two-run shot.
  • Senior George Cooper hit his first home run of the season and seventh homer of his career, adding two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Senior Matt Giberti tallied a hit and a run scored, and junior Max Lane posted a run scored and two walks.
  • Making his first collegiate appearance as a pitcher, junior Gio Colasante registered four strikeouts over 2.0 innings pitched, including striking out the side in the top of the eighth.
  • Harvard recorded two home runs in a game for the second time on the weekend after also accomplishing the feat in the season opener against Fordham on Friday. 

How It Happened

  • Indiana plated one run in the top of the second and two more runs in the top of the third to take an early 3-0 edge.
  • The Hoosiers tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth behind a two-run home run, moving ahead 5-0.
  • Harvard responded in the bottom of the fifth as Cooper launched a two-run home run to left field to pull the Crimson within 5-2.
  • The designated visitors of Indiana notched three runs in the top of the sixth to push its margin to 8-2.
  • Kang hit his second home run of the weekend with a two-run shot to left in the last of the sixth, pulling the Crimson within 8-4.
  • Indiana tallied four runs in the top of the seventh to extend its advantage to 12-4 and charted two runs in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
