WASHINGTON, D.C. – With another sensational showing from the pitching staff, Harvard softball earned its sixth-straight win, posting back-to-back shutouts on the road with a 1-0 victory against Atlantic 10 foe George Washington.
Three different Crimson combined for the shutout of the Revolutionaries, as the Crimson posted shutouts in back-to-back contests for the first time since the 2017 season.
After tossing 3.1 scoreless and hitless innings in relief yesterday, sophomore
Nicolette Hunter orchestrated another strong performance in the circle, allowing zero runs and just three hits with a season-high five strikeouts over 4.0 innings of work. First-Year
Olivia Torres tossed relief pitches in the fifth inning, as junior and team captain
Ryan Grace secured the win with 2.2 innings of work, collecting two strikeouts while just allowing one hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In a similar script to yesterday's win against Georgetown, both Harvard (11-4, 0-0 Ivy League) and George Washington (16-9, 3-0 Atlantic 10) held each other scoreless over the first five innings at GW Softball Stadium.
Hunter picked up right where she left off in her relief appearance yesterday, limiting the Revolutionaries across her four-inning start. The second inning was a highlight for Hunter, as the Camarillo, California native started the inning with a strikeout, and ended the frame with back-to-back strikeouts.
An All-Ivy League honorable mention last season, Hunter left the game after 4.0 scoreless innings pitched, striking out five batters and allowing only three hits.
Harvard found the game-winning run in the sixth inning. With two outs, first-year catcher
Quinn Salazar-Stewart hit the Crimson's only extra-base hit of the afternoon, sending a pitch to the gap in left centerfield for a double. Senior infielder
Priyanka Kaul kept the Crimson's scoring chance alive, as junior infielder
Finley Payne converted the scoring opportunity for the lone run of the game, 1-0.
A strikeout from Grace in the seventh secured Harvard's sixth consecutive win, as the Crimson earned the victory with one run on seven hits, holding the hosts scoreless with four hits. Neither side committed an error.
