Softball Drops 2025 Mizuno Showdown Finale Against Kent State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Harvard softball wrapped up its time at the 2025 Mizuno Showdown on Sunday morning, splitting the series against Kent State with a 6-1 loss at Anderson Softball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The opening frame in Chapel Hill, North Carolina saw Kent State (5-13, 0-0 Mid-American) record the first two runs of the contest on a home run. Harvard's (5-4, 0-0 Ivy League) bats got going in the bottom of the first, as senior outfielder and team captain Savannah Fitzpatrick drove a ball into the gap in right field for a double. A Golden Flash error and a walk loaded bases, but Kent State worked out of the jam to preserve its 2-0 lead.

A scoreless second inning was followed by two runs in the third inning for Kent State, pushing the Golden Flash lead to four. In the next inning, Kent State struck again, adding two more runs to grow the advantage, 6-0.

The Crimson offense got on the board in the sixth inning. On a 0-1 count, senior infielder Maya Douglas sent a ball to deep right for her first homer of the 2025 campaign. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Douglas homered twice last season.

Harvard collected seven hits in the finale against the Golden Flashes, as Fitzpatrick led the way with two hits, her second multi-hit effort of the weekend.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Sophomore infielder Sophie Sun led the way at the dish for the Crimson at the 2025 Mizuno Showdown. A native of Austin, Texas, Sun posted a team-best .500 batting average on the weekend.
  • Fitzpatrick also showcased her offensive talent in Chapel Hill, posting team-highs in total bases (12) and slugging percentage (.800).
  • Douglas launched her first home run of the season in the sixth inning.
  • In the circle, junior pitcher Riley Flynn pitched a team-high 11.2 innings, posting a 2.40 earned run average with seven strikeouts.
