PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Impressive showings in the circle and at the plate propelled Harvard softball to a pair of Ivy League victories against Penn in the Keystone State. The Crimson opened the series with a 3-1 win against the Quakers and closed the day with a 4-1 victory to earn the series win.

Nicolette Hunter was sensational yet again for the Crimson, limiting Penn to one run and four hits in her third straight complete game. An All-Ivy League honorable mention last year, Hunter collected seven strikeouts in game one, tying her career-high.

Savannah Fitzpatrick lifted the Crimson to its 15
th win of the campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
After the first two frames went scoreless between Harvard (15-8, 4-4 Ivy League) and Penn (2-25-1, 0-11), the Crimson opened the scoring in the third inning. First-Year outfielder
Elena Weinseimer drove a shot up the middle for a leadoff single, as Payne put the Crimson on the board with a home run to deep right-center field, 2-0.
A native of Liberty Township, Ohio, Payne now has three home runs, a new career-high for the 2023 All-Ivy League First Team honoree.
The hosts pulled a run-back in their half of the third on a single, 2-1.
With one out in the fifth inning, Sun tallied Harvard's final run of the game, launching her fifth home run of the season to deep left field, 3-1. The reigning Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year, Sun now has 15 home runs in her collegiate career.
In her third-straight complete game, Hunter was sensational in the circle. The Camarillo, California native held the Quakers to one run on four hits, as Hunter tied her career-high in strikeouts with seven. Hunter's 2.55 earned run average leads the Crimson this season.
Harvard scored three runs on eight hits, as the Crimson outhit an opponent in back-to-back games.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
Penn took the initial lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded, a groundout scored the first run of the second game of the series, 1-0.
Harvard wasted no time in evening the score in the next frame, 1-1. Douglas sent a pitch to left center field, as the ball bounced off the edge of the fence for a solo home run. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Douglas and Sun are tied for the team lead in home runs with five each.
From the third to the fifth inning, both pitching staffs excelled, as neither side scored until the sixth inning. Taking over in the circle in the second, junior
Riley Flynn was excellent in 4.2 innings of relief work, holding the hosts scoreless and just three hits with five strikeouts.
The Crimson secured the victory, scoring the last three runs of the day in the sixth inning. With two runners on base, Kaul laced a pitch all the way to the wall in right center field, clearing the bases with a two-run RBI-double, 3-1. Fitzpatrick extended the Crimson's lead later in the sixth, 4-1, dropping a hit into shallow left field for her 10
th RBI this season.
The Crimson tallied four runs on seven hits, as three different Harvard pitchers combined to hold Penn to one run and six hits with eight strikeouts.
HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
- In the series opener, Harvard hit a pair of home runs, as the Crimson recorded multiple home runs in a single game for the fourth time this season.
- Douglas and Sun are tied for the team lead in home runs this year with five each.
- In the first game between Harvard and Penn, Payne launched her third home run of the year, setting a new career-high for homers in a season.
- Hunter pitched her fourth complete game of the year in the 3-1 win against Penn, tying her career-high in strikeouts with seven.
- Across 14.0 innings of work in the circle today against Penn, the Crimson pitching staff posted a 1.00 ERA, recording 15 strikeouts as well.
