Baseball Defeats Dartmouth in Game Two, 4-1, Falls in Series Finale, 7-6

HANOVER, N.H. – Harvard University baseball defeated Dartmouth College in the second game of the series, 4-1, before falling in the series finale, 7-6, to close out a three-game Ivy League set on Sunday afternoon at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.
 
The Crimson (4-20, 2-7 Ivy) captured game two – a contest that was suspended due to darkness on Friday, Apr. 4 – to even up the series before the host Big Green (5-15, 4-5 Ivy) rallied to take game three with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth after Harvard held a 6-3 lead through seven innings.
 
In game two of the series, senior Matt Giberti hit a three-run triple, sophomore right-hander Truman Pauley did not allow an earned run over six innings in the win, and first-year left-hander Luca Alagheband threw three shutout innings in the save.
 
In the series finale, junior Gio Colasante threw 5.0 scoreless innings in the start, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts, while going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Senior George Cooper notched his third three-hit game of the year with a 3-for-5 effort while sophomore Ryan Mooney (2-for-2, triple, double, RBI, run), sophomore Tyler Shulman (2-for-3, double, RBI), and senior William Lybrook (2-for-4, two runs) all posted multi-hit games.

Game 2 (Resumed from Apr. 4): Harvard 4, Dartmouth 1

Senior Matt Giberti hit a three-run triple in the top of the fifth, sophomore right-hander Truman Pauley did not allow an earned run over six innings in the win, and first-year left-hander Luca Alagheband threw three shutout innings in the save as Harvard beat Dartmouth, 4-1, in game two of the series.
 
The Crimson plated four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead and remained ahead for the rest of the game in the victory over the Big Green.
 
On the mound, Pauley tossed 6.0 innings in the start and win, permitting one unearned run on three hits and eight walks with six strikeouts. Alagheband hurled 3.0 innings in relief, allowing no runs and no hits with one walk and three strikeouts in his first collegiate save.
 
The contest was suspended due to darkness on Friday, Apr. 4 in the top of the eighth with no runners on and no outs before the two teams resumed the contest on Sunday, Apr. 6.

How It Happened

  • Harvard opened the contest's scoring with four runs in the top of the fifth. After Feller, Mooney, and Rickheim all reached to load the bases, Giberti then sent a bases-clearing triple into right center to make the score, 3-0. Cooper then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Giberti and cap the frame's scoring.
  • The Big Green trimmed the margin to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
  • On Apr. 4, play was suspended in the top of the eighth due to darkness with no outs and no runners on.
  • The two teams resumed play on Sunday, Apr. 6 at 11:30 a.m.
  • In the resumed game, Alagheband remained on the mound after tossing a scoreless seventh on Friday. He permitted just one base runner over the eighth and ninth frames to close out the contest on Sunday. 

Game 3: Dartmouth 7, Harvard 6

Junior Gio Colasante threw five shutout innings on the mound alongside two hits and two RBIs at the plate, and senior George Cooper tallied three hits, but Harvard fell to Dartmouth, 7-6, in the series finale.
 
The Crimson held a 4-0 lead through five innings and a 6-3 edge through seven frames before the Big Green plated three runs in the eighth and walked off with the win with a run in the ninth.
 
Colasante threw 5.0 scoreless innings in the start, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts, while going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Cooper notched his third three-hit game of the year with a 3-for-5 effort while sophomore Ryan Mooney (2-for-2, triple, double, RBI, run), sophomore Tyler Shulman (2-for-3, double, RBI), and senior William Lybrook (2-for-4, two runs) all posted multi-hit games.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior right-hander and designated hitter Gio Colasante contributed as both a pitcher and batter. On the mound, threw 5.0 shutout innings in the start, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
  • Senior George Cooper finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base. He posted his third three-hit game of the year.
  • Sophomore Ryan Mooney notched a 2-for-2 effort with a triple, a double, an RBI, and a run scored. He logged his first two collegiate extra-base hits.
  • Senior William Lybrook tallied two hits and two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Tyler Shulman registered a 2-for-3 showing with a double and an RBI.
  • First-year Liam Wilson hit his first collegiate triple and scored a run.
  • Senior Matt Giberti added a run, a walk, and a stolen base, and senior Sawyer Feller tacked on a run scored. Giberti improved to 10-for-12 on stolen base attempts on the year.
  • As a team, Harvard totaled 12 hits in the contest, marking its fifth game this season with double-figure hits. The Crimson recorded double-digit hits twice in the series. 

How It Happened

  • The Crimson started the contest's scoring in the top of the first as Cooper sent a single through the right side to plate Giberti.
  • Harvard extended its edge to 3-0 in the top of the second with a pair of runs. A single up the middle from Lybrook alongside an error from the Big Green allowed Feller to score before Mooney lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Lybrook.
  • The visitors moved the margin to 4-0 with another run in the top of the fourth. After Wilson led off the frame with a triple to right center, Shulman brought him home with a sacrifice fly to left field.
  • Dartmouth pulled within 4-3 behind three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Harvard responded in the top of the seventh, moving its advantage to 6-3 with a pair of runs as Colasante sent a two-run single through the right side.
  • The Big Green tied the score at 6-6 in the last of the eighth with a three-run home run.
  • The hosts took the decision with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. 

Next Up

Harvard begins a seven-game homestand with a three-game Ivy League series against Princeton with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 12 starting at 11:30 a.m. (ESPN+) and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 13 at noon (ESPN+). The Crimson will host its annual Bark at the Park event as a part of Saturday's doubleheader.
