SALVADOR, BRAZIL – Rising sophomore Niki Piovan and the Greece National Junior Team will compete for a bronze medal at the Women's Junior World Championships today when they face Italy.
Greece finished second in group play with a 2-1 record, earning wins over Italy and Hungary before falling to the United States in a penalty shootout earlier in the week. In the quarterfinals, Greece defeated the hosts, 20-7, before dropping yesterday's semifinal to Spain.
Piovan helped lead the Crimson to its first-ever CWPA Championship in her rookie campaign after netting 58 goals and adding 48 assists to power Harvard to its first NCAA Tournament appearance last season. She was named CWPA Rookie of the Tournament following a 10-8 overtime win against Princeton and became just the fourth Crimson to earn CWPA Rookie of the Year honors in program history. Piovan also secured a spot on the CWPA First Team for her standout play during the regular season.
