CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Harvard women's volleyball (0-6) took set one over the undefeated Boston College Eagles (10-0) but ultimately fell 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 15-25, 16-25) in the first match of the Eagle Classic.
How it Happened
The Crimson grabbed the lead early as it secured the match's first four points. Throughout the middle of the frame, Harvard led by as many as seven and held an advantage of 15-10 at the media timeout. Despite a late-set attack from the Eagles, the Crimson controlled the entirety of the first set taking a 1-0 lead following a 25-22 result. Throughout the opening frame, Harvard recorded five blocks and held Boston College to a .194 hitting percentage.
Harvard carried its momentum into the second with another hot start as it hit .571 and led 10-6 early. The Eagles started to settle in and took their first lead of the match after a 6-0 run. The Crimson, however, recovered quickly, using its own 4-0 run to pull back in front, 14-12. Even with Harvard swinging the momentum back in its favor, the Eagles went on to score 13 of the next 16 points to tie the match with a 25-17 second-set victory.
The Eagles didn't let the Crimson gain the early momentum in the third set, pulling ahead 6-1. The hosts didn't relinquish its lead for the entirety of the set, not allowing Harvard to pull within fewer than three and ultimately going up 2-1 following a 25-15 third frame.
Harvard battled tightly in the opening points of the fourth set, evening the contest at 12-12. From that point on, however, the Eagles went on an 8-1 run to take full control. Boston College ultimately won the final set, 25-16, to win the opening match of the Eagle Classic, 3-1.
Harvard Highlights
- Brynne Faltinsky led the offensive attack, recording 14 kills while hitting .265. Additionally, the senior added six digs and contributed to three blocks.
- Ali Farquhar and Sofia Rossi also looked strong, each adding eight kills in the contest.
- Taylor Larkin had a dominant all-around performance, registering seven kills while hitting at a .417 clip and contributing to six blocks.
- Sophia Wei recorded her first two career kills against the Eagles and led the team with 23 assists and nine digs. The first-year also recorded two aces.
- The Crimson registered a season-best 11 blocks in the four-set battle with Boston College.
