Men’s Golf Completes Play at The Goat

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Harvard men's golf team wrapped up its run at The Goat this afternoon, securing a ninth-place finish in the event. The Crimson posted rounds of 301, 284 and 296 to finish 29-over-par as a team. Ieuan Jones led the squad individually, posting a T17 finish with a tournament score of 219 (+6).
 

How it Happened

The Crimson made its first ever appearance in The Goat this weekend, a tournament hosted by the United State Naval Academy at the Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis. Harvard competed against a stacked field that was filled with teams up and down the east coast.
 
The Crimson posted a team score of 301 (+17) in the first round of the tournament, a score that slotted the team in 10th place after 18 holes. Reese Jensen and William Ma tied for the lowest score in the first round with rounds of 73 (+2). Ieuan Jones was close by with a 74 (+3) in his first round.
 
Harvard began to turn it on in the second round, bouncing back with a team score of even-par 284 in the next 18 holes. Barry Zhang led the comeback with a score of 68 (-3) in the second round and Morgan Riley's 70 (-1) added to the Crimson cause. Jones and Ma posted round of 72 (+1) and 74 (+3), respectively, to contribute to the team scoring in round two.
 
The final round of competition on Sunday saw Harvard post a team score of 296 (+12), which dropped the team into ninth place at the end of the tournament. Riley closed out the event with a solid score of 72 (+1), followed by Jones and his score pf 73 (+2).
 
Jones secured another top 20 finish after coming in T17 with a tournament score of 219 (+6). After going even par over the last two rounds, Riley moved into T30 in the field.
 

Harvard Highlights

  • The Crimson's second round score of 284 (E) was tied for the lowest team round in the tournament.
  • Harvard had the third-most birdies as a team in the field with 42.
  • Ieuan Jones tied for the lowest scoring average on par-three holes in the tournament, shooting -2 over the three rounds.
  • First-year Morgan Riley had the lowest round score with a 70 (-1) in the second round.

Up Next

Harvard will be back on the course in two weeks when it makes its return to the field at the Hamptons Intercollegiate on Oct. 6-7. The Crimson will compete at the prestigious Maidstone Club in East Hampton, N.Y. – a Golf Digest Top 100 Course in the Nation – for the third season in a row when it travels to Long Island in two weeks.
