PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three different Crimson found the back of the cage in the second half at Goldberger Family Field, as No. 5 Harvard field hockey extends its winning streak to nine with a 3-1 win at Brown.
After a scoreless first half that saw Harvard outshoot the hosts, 11-0, junior forward
Emily Bronckers opened the scoring just three minutes into the third quarter, as Brown would equalize shortly after. Seniors
Lara Beekhuis and
Sage Piekarski would both score critical goals to keep the Crimson undefeated in Ivy League action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams traded possession in the first quarter, as it was Harvard (11-1, 5-0 Ivy League) that rattled off the first three shots of the contest. The Crimson's momentum carried over into the second quarter, as five penalty corners within a minute resulted in eight shots taken in the second frame.
At the end of the first half, Harvard recorded 11 shots while holding the hosts to zero attempts.
The Crimson attack capitalized in the initial moments of the second half. An excellent pass from first-year forward
Evie Smith found Bronckers in the circle, as the Blaricum, Netherlands spun around a defender and found a spot in the cage for the opening goal.
Appearing in seven matches this season, Bronckers has now scored in three-straight matches, representing the longest goal scoring streak in her Crimson career.
Brown (4-9, 1-4) evened the score four minutes later, as Harvard regained the lead with just seconds remaining in the third quarter. Beekhuis received a pass into the circle, evaded multiple tackle attempts from Bears defenders, and fired a shot into the cage for the game-winning goal, 2-1. A three-time All-Ivy League selection, Beekhuis ranks second on the team in goals (7) and points (18) this year.
Last season's leading goal scorer in the Ivy League, Piekarski put the finishing touches on Harvard's win in Providence. Once again, Smith facilitated the Crimson attack, finding Piekarski right in front of goal. The goal represents Piekarski's eighth goal of the year, a team best, as the Concord, Massachusetts native has scored in five straight matches.
After the third goal, Harvard's hold on possession and defense structure saw out the 3-1 victory against the Bears. The Crimson recorded 18 shots, 12 on target, while a Harvard defense of first-year
Elin van Sante, senior
Smilla Klas, junior
Paige Cornelius and senior
Charlotte Casiraghi limited the hosts to just four shots.
