CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard fencing head coach
Daria Schneider has promoted
Adam Maczik to associate head coach of the men's and women's programs. Maczik joined the Harvard staff in 2019 as Schneider's first hire and has served in assistant coaching role since arriving in Cambridge. In his time with the Crimson, he has helped build the program's success in epee, guiding multiple NCAA champions, All-Americans and All-Ivy honorees.
"Adam is an anchor of this program. He was my first hire, and this is our eighth season together," Schneider said. "We've already accomplished so many of the things you can accomplish in college athletics, and I am excited to see how he will continue to develop in this role."
Under Maczik's guidance, Harvard epee fencers have earned 18 first or second-team All-Ivy League selections across the six Ivy League Championships contested during his tenure. His epee squads have also produced six First Team All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions: Jonas Hansen in men's epee in 2023 and Emily Vermeule in women's epee in 2024. Vermeule became the first women's epee NCAA champion in program history.
Harvard has sent 19 of the 20 possible men's and women's epee entrants to the NCAA Championships during Maczik's tenure. His epee fencers have earned more than 20 NCAA qualifications, including seasons in which more than two fencers in a gender and weapon qualified, though NCAA entry is capped at two.
Maczik has also played a leading role in revising the national NCAA qualification process. The proposal he developed was unanimously approved and implemented by the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee. He is the only assistant coach to have been appointed to the committee.
Maczik came to Cambridge after coaching at Marx Fencing Academy and Boston Fencing Club, and serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Boston College. A former international competitor, he won the Division I North American Cup and Division 1A National Championship in 2015. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in education from Western Governors University.
