CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Goals in consecutive shifts in the third period gave Harvard the lead as the Crimson defeated Princeton by a score of 5-3 on Friday night at Bright-Landry.
Getting contributions from up and down the lineup, 10 different Crimson players recorded a point in the win. Junior Michael Callow netted his first of the season, Mick Thompson scored his first goal since Jan. 24, Heikki Ruohonen scored in his return to the lineup after missing the last two weeks, and Justin Solovey netted his second game-winning goal of the season as the Crimson won its first game of the season when trailing by two goals.
A massive three points in the ECAC standings, the Crimson is now tied with Princeton for fourth place heading into the final game of the regular season. With many tiebreakers at hand, final playoff seeding is still yet to be determined – perhaps the biggest win of the season for the Crimson, it keeps the first-round bye in play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Michael Callow opened the scoring on the power play after beating Arthur Smith glove side on a one-timer to give Harvard a 1-0 lead early in the game. His first goal of the season, the power-play marker was the first goal with the man advantage since Jan. 23.
Princeton would tie the game on a weird goal after a Tigers breakaway – Charette made the first save before the puck popped up in the air and got behind the Crimson netminder for the equalizer.
The Tigers would score the second and third goals of the game to take a commanding lead in the second period before the Crimson responded with a Mick Thompson deflection to pull the Crimson within one heading into the third. Assisted by Matthew Morden and Ryan Healey, Healey fired a one-timer that Thompson deflected to give the Crimson an extremely timely goal.
The Crimson picked up right where they left off coming out of the break as Heikki Ruohonen tied the game in his return to the lineup. One of his many big goals on the season, Ruohonen picked a puck up off the back wall and made no mistake for his fourth of the season.
On the very next shift, Justin Solovey picked the corner through a screen to give Harvard the lead for the first time since the early goings of the first period.
Mason Langenbrunner hit the empty net to seal the deal and split the season series with the Tigers.
