Alagheband Throws Six Shutout Innings, Baseball Drops Narrow 2-1 Decision at Rice

HOUSTON, Texas – Sophomore left-handed pitcher Luca Alagheband threw 6.0 shutout innings with seven strikeouts in the start, but Harvard University baseball dropped a narrow 2-1, decision to Rice University on Saturday evening at Reckling Park.
 
Competing in game two of the three=game series, the Crimson (0-5) plated the game's opening run in the top of the fifth before the Owls (5-6) scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to take the decision.
 
Alagheband did not allow a run over his 6.0 innings, giving up just two hits and one walk against his seven strikeouts. The Crimson pithing staff did not allow a run over the first seven frames before the hosts struck in their final turn at bat in the eighth.

How It Happened

  • Harvard opened the game's scoring with a run in the top of the fifth. After Witkow doubled down the left field line with one out and eventually moved to third on a fielder's choice, he came home to score following a passed ball.
  • Rice took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth as Garet Boehm and Paul Smith each hit a solo home run.
  • The Crimson threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs before the Owls were able to escape the jam.
