Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s Hockey Bests Northeastern in Beanpot Third Place Game, 4-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Four different Crimson found the back of the net at TD Garden in the Beanpot Third Place Game, as Harvard men's hockey snaps its two game losing streak with a 4-1 win against Northeastern.

Junior Matthew Morden started the scoring midway through the first period with his third goal of the campaign. After Northeastern equalized on the power play in the second, first-year Chase Stefanek put the Crimson back ahead just four minutes later. In the third period, first-year Richard Gallant put the game away with his seventh goal of the season, as senior Philip Tresca wrapped it up with an empty net goal in the final minutes of regulation.

Harvard's offense was superb against the Huskies, as the Crimson ended the day with 40 shots on goal, its most since it recorded 42 in a 5-1 win against St. Lawrence on Friday, Jan. 16. Sophomore keeper Ben Charette was superb in goal for the Crimson, as the Aurora, Ontario native recorded 32 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Harvard generated attacking chances early in the contest and limited looks for Northeastern to start the first period, as the Crimson recorded seven shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the contest at TD Garden.
With 7:52 left on the clock, the Crimson found the breakthrough. Tresca fired a pass across the face of goal, as Morden deflected the pass into the goal for the opening strike of the clash with the Huskies. A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Morden scores his third of the season and the fifth goal of his Crimson career, as he tallies a goal for the first time since Monday, Jan. 19 against Union.

The Crimson carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, as Harvard logged 10 shots on goal in the first period. Charette was stellar between the posts, keeping the Huskies off the scoreboard with nine saves.
In the opening phases of the second period, Harvard kept applying pressure on the Huskies. With 6:25 left in the second period, Northeastern leveled the score at 1-1, as the Crimson responded quickly to regain the lead. With under three minutes to go in the frame, Harvard orchestrated a two-on-one opportunity, as first-year Aidan Lane spotted Stefank who buried the one-time shot into the net.

In his first campaign with the Crimson, Stefank now has three goals and four points this season, as the Yorba Linda, California native has two goals in his last four appearances on the ice. Lane registers his fifth assist of the season, as the Mississauga, Ontario native is one of three first-years with 10 or more points this year, joining Gallant and Heikki Ruohonen.

The Crimson kept the Huskies off the board for the remainder of the second period, carrying a 2-1 lead into the final intermission. Harvard registered 20 shots on goal while holding Northeastern to 14 in the second period. Charette stopped 13 shots in the second period, bringing his tally for the game to 22 saves.

The offense kept clicking in the third period, scoring within the first five minutes to double the lead. With Harvard pinning Northeastern back in its own half, Gallant corralled a loose puck and fired in the Crimson's third goal of the evening at TD Garden, 3-1. A native of Concord, Massachusetts, Gallant leads all first-years on the Crimson with seven goals, as he scores in consecutive contests for the first time in his collegiate career.

Harvard's defense continued to stifle the Huskies, as Tresca scored on an empty net to seal the Crimson's 4-1 win against Northeastern. Tresca is now tied for the team in lead in goals with eight on the season.

The Crimson were stellar on both sides against Northeastern at TD Garden, ending the contest with 40 shots on goal, recording 40 or more shots on target in a game for the third time this season. Between the posts, Charette was stellar, recording 32 saves with a .970 save percentage.
