Softball Ends New York Trip with Defeats Against St. John’s, Army

QUEENS, N.Y. – Harvard softball concluded its journey to the Big Apple with rematches against St. John's and Army, as the Crimson fell short in the contests against the Red Storm and Black Knights.

Harvard's offense found a rhythm in the second meeting against St. John's, as the Crimson outhit the Red Storm, 9-7, but an early surge lifted St. John's to the 7-4 victory. Junior infielder Sophie Sun went a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI at the plate against St. John's as Sun records three or more hits in a game for the first time this year.

The Crimson closed out the weekend with a 14-4 loss against Army. Once again, Sun paced Harvard's offense, logging two runs and driving in three runs to go along with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. Along with Sun, sophomores Alexa Muller and Quinn Salazar-Stewart also recorded multiple hits against the Black Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE

St. John's (18-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) started the contest in control, scoring five runs across the first two frames to open a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Harvard (6-11-1, 0-0 Ivy League) cut into the Red Storm advantage with a pair of runs. Junior outfielder Audrey Szollosi put traffic on the base paths early with a leadoff single, as Sun worked a walk to put a runner in scoring position. Junior pitcher Nicolette Hunter was once again productive with runners in scoring position, clearing the bases with a two-run RBI double to put the St. John's lead at 5-2.

The Red Storm would tally two runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain its five-run lead, as the Crimson kept battling at the plate to stay within reach. With runners on second and first base, Sun found success at the plate once again, driving in a run by sending a shot into the outfield for a RBI single, 7-3.

Harvard added one more run in the top of the seventh to cement the final score of 7-4 in the favor of St. John's. The Crimson scored its four runs on nine hits, as Sun and Szollosi each recorded multiple hits. Hunter drove in two runs, as she ends a contest with multiple RBIs for the second time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO

Harvard's last contest in the Empire State started with Army (10-14, 0-0 Patriot League) tallying four runs across the first three innings, 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, Sun continued her stellar form at the plate, launching her third home run of the season to put the score at 4-2 in favor of the Black Knights. A native of Austin, Texas, Sun leads all Crimson with three home runs and 18 RBIs this season, as Sun now has 20 home runs in her collegiate career.

After a two-run home run from Army in the fourth inning made it a 6-2 ballgame, Harvard pulled within three runs in its half of the fourth inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Sun once again converted a scoring chance for the Crimson, lacing an RBI single to score first-year outfielder Sheila Forbes, 6-3.
