Gavin Smith registered three RBIs, a homer, and a double as Harvard University baseball outlasted California Baptist University, 14-12, on Monday night at James W. Totman Stadium.

Playing in the series finale of a four-game set, the Crimson (1-12) took leads of 8-3 in the fourth, 10-4 in the sixth, and 14-9 in the ninth to hold off multiple rally attempts from the host Lancers (17-5).

As a team, Harvard posted season highs in runs (14) and hits (14) with six members of the Crimson posting multi-hit games. Kang went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, three runs, a homer, and a double while Smith finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a homer, a double, and a run.

Owen Tahnk earned his first career save, coming on for the game's final two outs.Â
Harvard Highlights
- As a team, Harvard posted season highs in runs (14) and hits (14). The Crimson posted double-figure runs for the first time on the year and double-digit hits for the second time.
- Senior Jordan Kang finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs, three runs, a home run, and a double. He notched his first homer of the year and eighth of his career. Kang recorded his third three-hit game of the season.
- Sophomore left fielder Gavin Smith compiled a 2-for-4 day with three RBIs, a home run, a double, and a run scored. He launched his second homer of the year.
- Senior Max Lane contributed a 2-for-4 effort with three runs scored and a walk.
- First-year third baseman Matthew Witkow went 2-for-5 with an RBI, a run, and a walk.
- Junior shortstop Jack Rickheim and senior first baseman Gio Colasante each tallied two hits and two runs.
- Junior second baseman Tyler Shulman added a walk and a run, sophomore catcher Liam Wilson tacked on an RBI, and junior right fielder Ryan Mooney chipped in a hit and a run.
- Six members of the Crimson registered multi-hit games on the day.
- Sophomore right-hander Owen Tahnk earned his first career save, throwing 0.2 innings and allowing no runs on no hits and no walks.
- First-year right-hander Brett Gable earned his first collegiate win.
- First-year right-hander Davis Kahn threw 4.2 innings in his first career start, allowing four runs – all earned – on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout.Â
How It Happened
- CBU opened the game's scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second.
- Harvard responded with six runs in the top of the third to move ahead, 6-3. Kang started the frame's scoring with a two-run double to right field before Shulman brought in a run with a ground ball. Closing out the stanza's scoring, Wilson plated a run with a ground out, Smith drove a run in with a double to right center, and Shulman later came home on a wild pitch.
- The Crimson plated two more runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-3 advantage as Shulman lifted a fly ball to left field that was lost in the lights and brought in both Lane and Kang.
- The Lancers cut the margin to 8-4 with a run in the last of the fifth.
- Harvard extended its lead to 10-4 in the top of the sixth as Kang lifted a two-run shot out to center field for his first home run of the season.
- CBU countered with five runs in the bottom of the seventh, pulling within 10-9.
- In the bottom of the eighth, senior left-hander Brian Dowling induced a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning and keep the Crimson in the lead.
- Harvard extended its lead to 14-9 with four runs in the top of the ninth. Smith started the frame's scoring with a two-run home run to left field before Witkow closed the stanza with an RBI single to right center.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Tahnk came on for the final two outs, recording a pair of fly outs to garner the save and secure the victory.Â
