Baseball Wins Game One, 4-1, Splits Ivy Opening Doubleheader with Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Gio Colasante won as a pitcher in game one and launched a two-run home run in game two as Harvard University baseball beat Columbia University, 4-1, in game one before falling, 5-3, in game two to split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
 
Competing in its first Ivy League games of the season and playing in the Northeast region for the first time on the year, the Crimson (2-13, 1-1 Ivy) took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on its way to the victory in game one before the Lions (3-12, 1-1 Ivy) broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the sixth to take the decision in game two.
 
In game one, Colasante threw 6.0 innings in the start and win, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts while Gable tossed 3.0 innings in relief in the save, permitting no runs on two hits and no walks with one strikeout. At the plate, junior shortstop Jack Rickheim and junior second baseman Tyler Shulman each posted three-hit games while Colasante added an RBI as a batter.
 
In game two, Colasante went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs, recording his team-high third home run of the season while senior Max Lane added an RBI double. On the mound, sophomore left-hander Luca Alagheband threw 5.0 innings in the start, allowing three runs with four strikeouts while senior left-hander Brian Dowling tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Game 1: Harvard 4, Columbia 1

Senior right-hander Gio Colasante and first-year left-hander Brett Gable combined to allow just one run on four hits and two walks over nine innings as Harvard beat Columbia, 4-1, in its Ivy League opener on Saturday.
 
Competing in its first game in the Northeast this season, the Crimson took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning and maintained the lead for the rest of the game over the host Lions.
 
Colasante threw 6.0 innings in the start and win, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts while Gable tossed 3.0 innings in relief in the save, permitting no runs on two hits and no walks with one strikeout. At the plate, junior shortstop Jack Rickheim and junior second baseman Tyler Shulman each posted three-hit games while Colasante added an RBI as a batter.

  • As a team, Harvard tallied 11 hits, totaling double-figure hits for the second straight game and third time this season. 

How It Happened

  • Harvard struck first with a run in the top of the third. After Wilson set the table with a lead-off double, he later came home to score after Rickheim sent a single to left field and Wilson advanced one more base on a throwing error.
  • The Crimson extended its margin to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. After Wilson lifted a fly ball to left field with two outs, both Lane and Shulman came home to score.
  • After five scoreless frames from Colasante, the Lions plated their first run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single, cutting the difference to 3-1.
  • Colasante helped himself in the top of the seventh, sending an RBI single to center field to bring Rickheim home and make the score 4-1.
  • Gable came on in relief with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, inducing a fly out to left field and a double play to escape the jam.
  • Gable produced another double play in the bottom of the eighth to keep the Crimson lead at three runs. He then closed the game with a strikeout in the bottom of the ninth to complete his first career save. 

Game 2: Columbia 5, Harvard 3

 
Senior Gio Colasante hit a two-run home run to tie the game in the fifth inning, but Harvard fell to Columbia in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, 5-3.
 
Trailing 3-0, the Crimson scored one run in the third and two runs in the fifth before the Lions plated the game's final two runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the decision.
 
Colasante went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs, recording his team-high third home run of the season while senior Max Lane added an RBI double.   • Columbia scored the game's first three runs behind a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and a sacrifice fly in the last of the second.
  • Harvard countered in the top of the fourth as a double to left field from Lane brought home Colasante to cut the margin to 3-1.
  • The Crimson tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fifth as Colasante launched a two-run home run to center field for his team-high third homer of the season.
  • The Lions then scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead, 5-3.
