Kang, Colasante Homer, Baseball Falls to Columbia in Series Finale, 8-3

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seniors Jordan Kang and Gio Colasante each hit home runs, but Harvard University baseball fell at Columbia University, 8-3, in the series finale of a three-game set on Sunday afternoon at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
 
Closing out its Ivy League opening series, the Crimson (2-14, 1-2 Ivy) tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run from Kang before the Lions (4-12, 2-1 Ivy) plated the game's next six runs to gain separation.
 
Colasante went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs, and an RBI, notching his team-high fourth homer of the year and 14th homer of his career while Kane posted his second homer of the season – and week – and the ninth homer of his career.

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior first baseman Gio Colasante went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. He launched his second homer of the series, his team-high fourth of the season, and his 14th home run of his career.
  • Senior third baseman Jordan Kang tallied a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. He registered his second home run of the season and the ninth of his career. Kang blasted a homer for the second time on the week after hitting his first of the year at California Baptist on Monday.
  • Senior center fielder Max Lane posted a double, marking his second double of the series and his third of the season.
  • Sophomore right-hander Daniel Sams threw 1.0 inning of scoreless relief, allowing no runs on no hits and no walks with two strikeouts. 

How It Happened

  • Columbia opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a pair of RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Harvard responded in the top of the fourth as Kang blasted a two-run home run to left field to tie the score at 2-2.
  • The Lions re-gained the lead with three runs in the last of the fourth, moving ahead 5-2 on a three-run home run.
  • The hosts added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh behind three RBI singles, taking an 8-2 edge.
  • The Crimson tallied the game's final run as Colasante drove a solo home run to right field to make the margin, 8-3.
