Sailing Wins Friis Trophy, Posts Top-10 Finish at Duplin Trophy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing won the Friis Trophy Team Race and came in sixth place at the Duplin Trophy Women's Team Race this past weekend. With its victory at the Friis Trophy, the Crimson has won at least one regatta in four straight weekends.

Friis Trophy Team Race | Cambridge, Mass.

Harvard won the Friis Trophy for the first time since at least 2008-09, as it posted a 17-2 record across two days of action on the Charles River. Justin Callahan and Aidan Pesce occupied the Crimson's top boat, with Mitchell Callahan and Michelle Chung/Christina Chen competing in Harvard's B-boat. Robby Meek, meanwhile, was the third skipper in the lineup and was paired with Jacob Posner.

The Crimson finished Round 1 with a 7-1 mark, with the only blemish coming to Stanford, which finished 1-3-4. Harvard, however, answered by winning all eight second-round races to take a 15-1 record into the Final 4, where it went 2-1, with 1-2-5 victories over Boston College and Stanford. Roger Williams got the best of the Crimson in the final round, 1-2-6, but only after it was dealt a pair of 1-2-6 losses by Harvard in the first two rounds. At 17-2 for the regatta, the Crimson captured the trophy well clear of Stanford and RWU, which were both were for the weekend.

Duplin Trophy Women's Team Race | Medford, Mass.

Harvard came in sixth place at the recently defrosted Upper Mystic Lake in nearby Medford. Zoey Ziskind skippered the Crimson's top boat and was joined by Peyton Hadfield and Amelie Zucker. Kate Danielson took the lead in Harvard's B-entry, with Zucker, JJ Drummond and Skyler Reading serving as crew over two days of action. Rounding out the lineup was skipper Sophia Montgomery and crew Theresa Straw and Katherine Shin.

The Crimson split its first four races before earning decisions over Rhode Island (1-2-5) and MIT (1-3-5), which were part of its five victories as it finished with a 5-4 record, just one win behind a five-team tie atop the leaderboard (6-3). Harvard, however, struggled on Sunday, posting just two victories – 1-2-3 vs. MIT and 1-2-5 vs. URI – en route to an overall record of 7-9. The Crimson finished behind Yale (13-3), Brown (12-4), Tufts (10-6), RWU (10-6) and Bowdoin (9-7).

Up Next

The Crimson will compete locally at the MIT-hosted Marchiando Trophy Team Race and head south to Rhode Island for the Dellenbaugh Trophy Women's Team Race (Brown host). Both regattas are slated for March 28-29.
