Men's Heavyweight Rowing 2V and 3V Win at Benderson Cup

Varsity eight finishes second behind Washington to close out the weekend.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Harvard men's heavyweight rowing team wrapped up Benderson Cup competition at the Sarasota Invitational on Nathan Benderson Lake Saturday afternoon. The second varsity eight and third varsity eight each claimed victories in their respective races. The Crimson raced against Washington, Stanford, Brown, Yale and Northeastern.

The fourth varsity eight kicked off the day with a second-place finish, a spot ahead of Friday's race, behind Washington's 4V8 'A' boat in a time of 6:20.68.

The Crimson boats earned the team's first win of the day a race later when the third varsity eight beat the field by nearly four seconds in 5:57.94. Coxed by Cate Frerichs and stroked by Marco Vicino, the threes were victorious twice on the weekend.

In the second varsity eight race, Harvard won by a margin of 0.39 seconds over Washington in a time of 5:45.01. The twos, coxed by Iris Hennin and stroked by Tyler Horler, were 1.35 behind their Friday time, but overtook the Huskies, who won Friday's race.

The final race of the day went to Washington's varsity eight boat. Harvard placed second at 5:46.59; 1.57 second off the lead.

Harvard competes at home next weekend on Saturday, April 4 against Cornell for the Robinson Cup.
