CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A six-run outing in the third inning made the difference for Harvard softball in the series finale against Brown on the road, as the Crimson earn its second-straight series win in Ivy League action with a 10-2 victory against the Bears.
Senior infielder
Finley Payne enjoyed a fantastic performance at the plate, as the Liberty Township, Ohio native drove in a career-best five runs on two hits. In the circle, senior pitcher
Riley Flynn continued her stellar, coming out the bullpen and holding Brown scoreless for the last five innings of the series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The second inning saw Harvard (16-15-1, 8-4 Ivy League) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a bang, as Payne sent a pitch high in the zone over the wall for a two-run homer. An NFCA Northeast All-Region Third Team selection in 2025, Payne is now tied for the team lead in home runs with seven, a new career high for Payne.
After Brown (11-19, 4-8) leveled the score in the bottom half of the second inning with a two-run home run of its own, Harvard exploded for six runs in the top of the third inning to cement a commanding 10-2 advantage. After singles from first-year outfielder
Sheila Forbes and junior infielder
Sophie Sun, a rip up the middle from first-year infielder
Hannah Ziecik put the Crimson back in front with an RBI-single, 3-2. A single from sophomore catcher
Quinn Salazar-Stewart loaded the bases, as Payne capitalized on another scoring opportunity, clearing the bases with a three-run RBI double, 6-2.
With runners now on the corners, a perfectly executed double steal allowed Payne to score the seventh run of the day, 7-2, as an RBI single from Forbes capped the inning and grew the Harvard lead to 8-2.
Taking over in the circle in the second inning, Flynn was once again lights out in the circle, holding the hosts scoreless across the last five innings of the series. Two more runs arrived for Harvard in the top of the seventh to punctuate the win, as sacrifice fly from junior outfielder and team captain
Megan Davies and an RBI single from junior outfielder and team captain
Audrey Szollosi secured the 10-2 win for the Crimson.
Harvard scored its 10 runs on 12 hits, as five different Crimson drove in runs. Payne led the way with a career-best five RBIs, as Salazar-Stewart recorded a game-high three hits and three runs. Coming out of the bullpen, Flynn tossed 5.1 scoreless innings, only allowing three hits while picking up one strikeout.
