Baseball Powers Past UMass in Beanpot Third-Place Game, 17-12

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Crimson tallied season highs in runs (17) and hits (17), all nine members of the Crimson's lineup posted at least one hit in the game, and Harvard University baseball powered past the University of Massachusetts, 17-12, in the third-place game of The Baseball Beanpot on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Competing at Boston College's Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at the Harrington Athletics Village, the Crimson (7-19) took leads of 7-0 and 17-7 on its way to the victory over the Minutemen (9-19).
 
Six members of the Crimson registered multi-hit games while seven members of the Crimson posted at least one RBI.
 
Senior Jordan Kang went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, four runs, and a home run, senior Max Lane contributed three RBIs, two hits, and two runs, and sophomore Cullen Stone finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Senior Gio Colasante posted a 2-for-4 effort with three runs and an RBI, junior Jack Rickheim totaled three hits, two runs, and an RBI, sophomore Gavin Smith totaled three RBIs, and first-year Aidan Colasante went 2-for-4 with two runs and a triple. 

Harvard Highlights

  • Harvard scored a season-high 17 runs in the game, marking its third game this season with double-figure runs.
  • The Crimson tallied a season-best 17 hits for its sixth game this year with double-digit hits.
  • Harvard notched 15 RBIs – one shy of its season high – for its second game this year with 10 or more RBIs.
  • All nine members of the Crimson's lineup posted at least one hit with six Crimson notching multi-hit games in the contest. Seven members of the Crimson contributed at least one RBI.
  • Senior third baseman Jordan Kang registered four RBIs, four runs, and two hits. He hit his third home run of the season and the 10th homer of his career.
  • Senior center fielder Max Lane contributed three RBIs, two hits, two runs, and three stolen bases.
  • Sophomore second baseman Cullen Stone finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs, and a double.
  • Senior first baseman Gio Colasante went 2-for-4 with three runs, an RBI, two walks, and two stolen bases.
  • Junior shortstop Jack Rickheim totaled three hits, two runs, and an RBI.
  • Sophomore left fielder Gavin Smith notched three RBIs and a hit.
  • First-year right fielder Aidan Colasante compiled two hits, two runs, and a triple.
  • Junior catcher Dominic Brancel added a hit, an RBI, and a run.
  • First-year designated hitter Zach Khozozian tacked on a hit and a run.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Daniel Sams threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, permitting no runs on one hit and one walk with one strikeout. 
 

How It Happened

  • Harvard opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Gio Colasante started the scoring before Lane, Gavin Smith, and Brancel each brought in a run with a ground ball.
  • The Crimson extended its lead to 7-0 with three runs in the top of the second. Lane brought in a run with a ground ball, Gio Colasante scored on an error, and Gavin Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to cap the frame's scoring.
  • The Minutemen scored a pair of runs in the last of the third to pull within 7-2.
  • UMass plated another five runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 7-7.
  • Harvard went back in front, 11-7, with four runs in the top of the fifth. After Rickheim hit an RBI single, Kang launched a three-run home run to left field to highlight the stanza's scoring.
  • An RBI single through the right side from Lane in the top of the seventh gave the Crimson a 12-7 edge.
  • Harvard extended its advantage to 17-7 with five runs in the top of the eighth. After Stone hit a two-run double, Kang hit a sacrifice fly, and both Lane and Gavin Smith each added an RBI single.
  • Massachusetts scored five runs in the last of the eighth to pull within 17-12.
