NEW ORLEANS – Harvard Sailing, ranked No. 6 in the most recent women's rankings, completed first-day action at the ICSA Women's Team Race National Championship in a tie for fourth place with College of Charleston. The two teams finished Sunday with a 6-3 record and enter Monday behind Stanford (8-0), Yale (8-0) and Brown (7-2).
Kate Danielson skippered the Crimson's top boat, with
JJ Drummond handling crew duties until the final race of the day.
Christina Chen, who won an open team race national championship on Saturday, hopped in with Danielson to face Tufts.
Sophia Montgomery was in Harvard's No. 2 boat and was joined by open team race champ
Rosella Irfan (1-6, 9) and
Katherine Shin (7-8). The Crimson's third boat, meanwhile, featured
Zoey Ziskind as skipper, with Chen (1-6) and
Amelie Zucker (7-9) serving as crew.
Harvard began its day with 1-2-3 victories over Bowdoin and Georgetown, before a 1-4-6 setback to Yale ended its unblemished morning. The Crimson, however, responded with 1-2-4 wins over Roger Williams and St. Mary's College of Maryland, with a 1-2-5 decision over Tulane squeezed in between.
Harvard ended its day on a sour note, unfortunately, going 1-2 in its final three races. The Crimson fell to Charles River foe MIT (2-4-5), beat Michigan (1-2-3) and lost to Tufts (3-4-6) to solidify its spot in the team standings.
When Harvard returns to Southern Yacht Club on Monday, it will have five more races to complete its first round. On the Crimson docket will be matchups against Brown, Cornell, College of Charleston, Stanford and Dartmouth.
