CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Former Crimson forward Matt Coronato is set to compete with USA Hockey at the 2026 IIHF Men's World Championship in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland. Team USA opens tournament play today against host Switzerland.
Announced to the roster on May 7, Coronato will make his second appearance at the World Championship after previously representing the United States following the completion of the 2022-23 Harvard season.
Coronato recorded his 100th career NHL point at the end of the season after totaling 18 goals and 27 assists for 45 points. Over his last two seasons with the Calgary Flames, the Long Island native has recorded 42 goals and 50 assists. The Flames selected Coronato in the first round with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, making him the highest draft pick in program history.
In his two seasons in Cambridge, Coronato showed a flair for the dramatic, scoring timely goals in some of Harvard's biggest moments. During the 2022-23 season, he scored overtime game-winners at Yale on Jan. 20 and against Colgate on Jan. 27, added a late game-tying goal in regulation in a win at Princeton on Jan. 6, and scored four goals in Beanpot matchups against Boston College and Northeastern.
As a rookie, Coronato scored the Crimson's biggest goal of the season, netting the overtime game-winner against Quinnipiac in a 3-2 victory in the ECAC Hockey Championship game. The goal lifted Harvard to the 2022 Whitelaw Cup, and Coronato was named the Most Outstanding Player of the ECAC Hockey Tournament.
