IRVINE, Calif. – Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving rising sophomore William Mulgrew became a national champion late Tuesday night after winning the 1500-meter freestyle at the Toyota National Championships. The Walpole, Massachusetts native posted a personal-best 14:58.50, which was also the fastest time by an American swimmer in 2026.
 
A 2026 CSCAA Second-Team All-American after finishing in ninth place in the 1650 free at the NCAA Championships in March, Mulgrew finished with a sub-15-minute time in the 1500 for the first time of his career. The effort made for an uneventful finish as he completed the race nearly 10 seconds faster than runner-up Sean Green (15:07.03).
 
Mulgrew, who edged Luka Mijatovic (14:59.27) for the fastest 1500m freestyle time in the U.S. this year, became the 22^nd American to finish under 15 minutes in event history and registered the 17^th-best performance in U.S. history.
 
Rising senior David Schmitt also appeared at the national championships, competing in the 200m butterfly. The two-time team captain finished 26^th overall (1:59.37), missing out on qualifying for the night finals.
 
Schmitt is scheduled to return to action on July 29 (50m fly) and July 30 (100m fly), with Mulgrew slated to compete on  July 31 (400m free) and Aug. 1 (800m free).
