No. 3 Field Hockey Falls, 3-1, Against No. 12 UMass

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 3 Harvard field hockey battled to a 3-1 defeat against No. 12 UMass this afternoon at Berylson Field. The Crimson struck first in the opening quarter of the match, as senior midfielder Lara Beekhuis extended her goal scoring streak to three matches with a goal against the Minutewomen. From there, UMass scored three times in the second quarter to earn the 3-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Harvard (2-1, 0-0 Ivy League) started fast against UMass (5-0, 0-0 Mid-American), scoring the opening goal midway through the first quarter. Junior midfielder Martha le Huray fired a pass from outside the circle, as Beekhuis redirected pass into the left side of the cage to put Harvard ahead, 1-0.

A native of Laren, Netherlands and an All-Ivy League selection last season, Beekhuis has now scored in each of the Crimson's first three contests of the 2026 season, as the 2023 Ivy League Tournament's Most Outstanding Player now has 34 goals and 79 points in her Crimson career.

The Crimson took the 1-0 lead into the end of the first quarter, as the Crimson outshot the Minutewomen, 2-1, in the first 15 minutes of the contest.

The second quarter saw the Harvard defense continue to stifle the UMass attack, as the visitors only took two additional shots in the second quarter. The Crimson would see out the second half to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, UMass recorded two goals to take a 2-1 advantage after 45 minutes of action at Berylson Field.

Harvard pushed the tempo in the fourth quarter, seeking an equalizer with six shots in the final 15 minutes of action. With under nine minutes to go, Harvard would earn three consecutive attacking penalty corner chances, as UMass would turn each shot away to preserve its 2-1 lead.

With under five minutes left on the clock in the fourth, UMass tallied another goal on an empty net to cement the 3-1 scoreline. Harvard outshot UMass, 11-10, as Harvard allowed three or more goals in a contest for the first time since the 2024 season.
