No. 3 Field Hockey Bounces Back with 2-1 Win Against Boston College

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two goals in the first half and an impressive defensive display pushed No. 3 Harvard field hockey to its third win of the season, as the Crimson bounce back with a 2-1 victory against crosstown foe Boston College this afternoon.

For a second-straight contest, Harvard scored in the first quarter, as senior forward Sage Piekarski opened the scoring with her second goal of the season. Junior midfielder Martha le Huray doubled the lead with a spectacular finish in the second quarter, as the Crimson defense of first-year defender Elin van Sante, senior defender Smilla Klas and junior midfielder Paige Cornelius only allowed nine shots across 60 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Harvard (3-1, 0-0 Ivy League) immediately established an attacking rhythm and an ownership of possession in the first quarter against Boston College (2-4, 0-0 Atlantic Coast), as the Crimson outshot the visitors, 8-2, in the initial 15 minutes from Berylson Field.

The Crimson produced the opening goal with under five minutes. Controlling the ball on the edge of the circle, le Huray found Piekarski in front of goal, as Piekarski dribbled around a defender and converted the chance to put Harvard ahead, 1-0. An All-America Second Team selection last season, Piekarski now has 80 points and 35 goals in her collegiate career.

In the second quarter, both teams battled for possession and chances, as it was Harvard that scored the next goal to double its lead. With the Crimson facing an attacking penalty corner opportunity, a rebounded shot found its way to le Huray, as the Teddington, England native perfectly lofted a close range shot above the Boston College keeper for her first goal of the 2026 campaign.

Heading into the halftime break, the Crimson owned a 2-0 lead, outshooting the Eagles, 12-7, across the first two quarters of action.

While Boston College would cut into the Crimson lead with a goal in the third quarter, 2-1, Harvard held steady and continued to apply pressure offensively and contain the opposition's attack. The Eagles only took two shots in the second half, while Harvard recorded 10 shots in the final two quarters on the way to the 2-1 victory.

Harvard records 20 or more shots in a contest for the second time this season, as the Crimson hold an opponent to under double-digit shots for the third time in 2026.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS

  • With her assist in the first quarter, le Huray now owns the team lead in assists with three.
  • Piekarski now has 35 goals and 80 points in her Crimson career. A native of Concord, Massachusetts, Piekarski is only one of six student-athletes in school history log 80 or more career points.
  • Harvard records 20 or more shots in a game for the second time this season.
  • The Crimson limit an opponent to single-digit shots for the third time this year.
  • Harvard defeats Boston College for the first time since 2018.
  • The Crimson is 7-3 against ACC teams since the 2021 season.
