Fourth Quarter Goal Lifts No. 3 Field Hockey Past No. 9 UConn, 1-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A stellar defensive showing and a timely goal in the fourth quarter from senior midfielder and team captain Lara Beekhuis lifted No. 3 Harvard field hockey to a key win against No. 9 UConn at Berylson Field.

Across the 90 minutes, Harvard's defense of junior Paige Cornelius, senior Smilla Klas and first-year Elin van Sante limited attacking opportunities for the Huskies, as the visitors only logged one shot in the first half and finished the game with only two shots on goal. An All-Ivy League selection last season, Beekhuis scored the game winning goal four minutes into the fourth quarter, marking the Laren, Netherlands native's 12th career game winning goal, the most among active Crimson.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Defense defined the first quarter between Harvard (2-0, 0-0 Ivy League) and UConn (3-1, 0-0 BIG EAST), as neither side broke down the opposing defensive structure. Harvard created the first offensive chance of the afternoon, earning the first and only penalty corner of the first quarter. Beekhuis received the ball at the top of the circle as her shot drifted just wide. Both defensive units excelled in the first quarter, as the Crimson and Huskies each only took one shot.

The stout defensive play continued in the second quarter, as Harvard and UConn combined for only one shot in the second period of action. The scoreboard stood at 0-0 heading into the halftime break, as the Crimson outshot the Huskies, 2-1, in the first half.

The third quarter saw the superb defensive play continue, as Harvard and UConn each recorded one shot and one penalty corner each in the third frame.

Four minutes into the final quarter of regulation, Harvard broke through, executing on its third penalty corner of the day. Receiving the pass from sophomore midfielder Rosa Kooijmans at the top of the circle, Beekhuis' shot flew into the top left corner of the cage, as her second goal of the season would be enough for Harvard to earn the 1-0 victory against UConn.

Harvard finished with five shots, three of them on goal, as the Crimson limited UConn to just two shots on goal across 60 minutes of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Linde Burger kept her first clean sheet of the season, as both of her saves arrived at critical moments in the fourth quarter.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS

  • Harvard defeats a top 10 opponent in the regular season for a fourth-consecutive year, as the Crimson is 10-2 in its last 12 contests against ranked foes.
  • Today's 1-0 victory marks Harvard's fifth-straight win against UConn, the longest winning streak for Harvard in the all-time series against the Huskies. Harvard has shutout UConn in three-straight meetings.
  • Harvard has won 21 straight regular season contests, a streak that dates back to October 25th, 2024.
  • With her goal in the fourth quarter, Beekhuis now has 12 career game-winning goals, the most among active Crimson.
  • Burger posts her first shutout of the 2026 season, marking the 10th shutout of the Heerhugowaard, Netherlands native's collegiate career.
