Casella has been part of a Crimson coaching staff that has turned around the Harvard field hockey program. In 2014, the Crimson posted a 10-7 overall record, the most victories since 2004. Harvard also finished the year with a 4-3 record in the Ivy League, the first winning record among conference foes since 2007. The winning ways continued in 2015 with a 9-8 record, marking the first back-to-back winning seasons for the Crimson since 2003 and 2004.

On an individual level, Casella has coached five All-Ivy League selections each of the last two seasons, including first team honorees Kyle Cordrey '17 and Elizabeth Jacobson '16.

Before joining the Harvard field hockey coaching staff, Liza Casella played for Wake Forest in the ACC. Casella played in 77 games, making 75 starts for the Demon Deacons. A defender, who was a member of the APC and DPC units, Casella finished her playing career with four goals, 10 assists and four defensive saves. She was an NFHCA All-South Region second team selection, as well as a choice for the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 2008 before concluding her career with a spot in the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game.
