Phil Tor rejoined the Harvard Athletic Communications team in March of 2022 as an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications after previously serving as a Communications Intern during the 2019-20 academic year. In July of 2023, Tor added Director of Creative Solutions to his title. In his new role alongside his colleagues, Tor hopes to continue the overhaul of Harvard's visual branding by creating graphics and digital elements to be used in the promotion of the University's 42 Varsity programs.Â
A native of Massachusetts, Tor began his first stint at Harvard in July of 2019 as a communications intern, assisting the full-time staff with a variety of projects. Additionally, he was tasked with leading promotional efforts for the M/W squash, Women's Tennis and Baseball programs. Under his guidance, those programs totaled 2.1 million impressions on social media and the number of followers increased by nearly 15-percent in just one season.Â
Following his year-long internship, Tor moved on to Army West Point, where he served as an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications for 10 months. While at West Point, Tor took over the promotion of the Hockey, Women's Lacrosse, Rugby, Sprint Football, Women's Tennis and Men's Soccer programs. He also worked on a number of projects relating to West Point's FBS Football program, including leading game day statistics among other duties. The Hockey program experienced tremendous growth under Tor's leadership, as the team's social media following increased by 20-percent in his short time as the team's director of communications, moving the program into the top-25 most followed Division I hockey programs according to Skull Sparks Analytics. The Twitter and Instagram accounts, specifically, totaled nearly five million by the time of his departure.
Tor departed West Point in February of 2022 to rejoin the communications staff at Harvard as an Assistant Director. He is now in charge of the promotion of the women's ice hockey, women's soccer and men's lacrosse programs while taking on a number of other tasks and duties around the office. Specifically, Tor leads the charge on the creation of digital elements used by the entire department including graphic design templates.Â
One of his largest projects to date, Tor was heavily involved in the creation and execution of Harvard Athletics' first ever media day campaign that involved all 42 programs. More specifically, Tor created and ran the photo backdrop station that resulted in content that was used over the course of the entire 2022-23 season by all the programs.
