NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Harvard women's soccer
team scored two goals late in the second half to rally for a 3-2
victory at archrival Yale Tuesday afternoon. Patricia Yau and
Melanie Baskind netted goals in the second half, while Gina
Wideroff tallied a score in the first stanza. Lauren Mann made two
saves for Harvard (7-5-1), which takes sole possession of first
place in the Ivy League with a 4-0 conference mark.
Midway through the opening half, Katherine Kuzma sent a long pass
behind the Yale defense. Wideroff weaved her way around a few
defenders and headed the ball into the back of the net for her
second goal of the season at 29:41. Through the first half of play,
each team had four shots, with the Crimson firing all four of its
shots on goal.
Early on in the second stanza, Yale (8-5, 3-1 Ivy League) knotted
the game on a header by Miyuki Hino that got past Harvard
goalkeeper Lauren Mann at 46:50. Six minutes later, the Bulldogs
grabbed a 2-1 lead, as Becky Brown kicked a loose ball into the
cage at 52:549. The Crimson crawled back, tying the game in the
72nd minute. Yau grabbed a pass from Alexandra Conigliaro and
tapped the ball in on a shot from the right corner of the cage.
Harvard took its second lead of the day at the 78:44 mark, as
Baskind fired a shot through the Yale defense, making it a 3-2
contest.
The Crimson outshot the Bulldogs, 14-12, while Yale had a slight
edge in corner kicks, 8-7. Harvard returns home to Princeton
Saturday, Oct. 24. The game between the Crimson and Tigers is
scheduled to begin at Ohiri Field at 11 a.m.
