NEW YORK - Harvard won the outright Ivy League
championship - its second straight - with a 2-1 overtime victory at
Columbia Saturday night. Melanie Baskind scored both Crimson goals.
Just 15 seconds away from claiming the victory in regulation,
Harvard was called for a foul and Columbia's Lauren Cook headed
home a free kick to send the game into overtime.
However, Baskind won the game with her second goal of the game
and fourth of the season 5:08 into extra time. It marked her second
game-winner this year.
The victory improves Harvard to 9-6-1 overall and 6-1 in the
league. The Crimson will find out its seeding and location in the
NCAA Championships Monday during the NCAA selection show on ESPNews
at 8 p.m. Columbia, which claimed the 2007 championship, dips to
7-7-3 and 3-3-1 in the league. Harvard enters championship play as
one of the country's hottest teams having won eight of its last
nine games.
Baskind put the Crimson ahead less than 10 minutes into the game
with Harvard's first shot when she dribbled through the Columbia
defense from 18 yards out straight on and flocked s shot to the
right side.
