PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite outhitting
Brown in both games of a Saturday doubleheader, the Bears came out
on top against Harvard to sweep a key twinbill in Providence. The
Bears took game one 3-1 and edged the Crimson in the nightcap,
8-5.
With the victories, Brown improves to 17-16-1 overall, and 10-4 in
Ivy League play while the Crimson slips to 10-24, 8-6 Ivy.
The Bears scored all three runs in the first three innings before
Harvard starter Jonah Klees (2-2) settled in to control the late
innings. In the second, a leadoff walk and a single led to the
Bbears' first run and Steve Daniels delivered a two-out hit
to make the score 2-0. Matt Nuzzo then led off the third with a
solo homer to make it 3-0. The story was pitcher Mark Gormley
however as the sophomore went 6.1 innings, striking out six while
allowing just one single run.
Sophomore Matt Kimball entered in the seventh and worked around a
walk to strikeout out two batters with the tying run at the
plate.
The second game saw more offense and again early strikes for the
Bears, which remained unbeaten at home this season (10-0-1). Brown
scored a pair of unearned runs in the first before Harvard answered
in the top of the second on an RBI single from Tyler Albright. An
RBI triple from Robert Papenhause gave the Bears a 3-1 lead after
two.
Daniels then delivered a three-run homer in the fourth inning
against Harvard starter Brent Suter, who otherwise controlled play
with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Trailing 6-1 however, it was
an uphill battle for the Crimson which also allowed solo homers
later in the game to Papenhause and Ryan Zrenda.
Chris Rouches continued his hot-hitting of late with a two-run
homer in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh. Dillon O'Neill
also got on the board with a solo homer in the seventh.
The teams return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
