Adams Lifts Cup
Former Harvard forward Craig Adams '99 became the first
Crimson alum to win two Stanley Cups Friday night, helping the
Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the host Detroit Red Wings to win the
championship of the National Hockey League.
Pittsburgh defeated Detroit, 2-1, in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup
Final at Joe Louis Arena. The home team had won each game in the
series before the Penguins scored two second-period goals and held
off an attempted rally by the Red Wings. Adams logged 11 minutes,
38 seconds of ice time and one shot on goal.
When Adams won the Cup as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes in
2006, he became the second former Harvard player to win it and the
first in 77 years. George Owen `28 also had his name etched on the
Cup after helping the Boston Bruins win it in 1929.
Adams played in all 24 of Pittsburgh's playoff games. He
scored three goals—one more than he did in the regular
season—and added a pair of assists. He scored in the
Penguins' Game 7 win against Washington in the Eastern
Conference semifinals and found the net in back-to-back games
against Carolina in the conference final. He added an assist in
Game 3 against the Hurricanes for the first multi-point playoff
game of his career.
Adams was also a key cog in the Penguins' penalty kill, which
spoiled 83.3 percent of opponents' power plays in the
playoffs. He ranked second among the team's forwards with an
average of more than two minutes of shorthanded ice time per
game.
The Penguins acquired Adams off waivers from Chicago March, and he
played in nine games down the stretch of the regular season after
suiting up in 36 games for the Blackhawks. He totaled two goals and
five assists for seven points. Adams has played in 507 NHL games,
amassing 90 points on 37 goals and 53 assists.
Adams played in 109 games for the Crimson from 1995 to '99.
He scored 29 goals with 33 assists for 62 career points.
