BOSTON, Mass. – Matthew Morden and Michael Callow were named the 2026–27 team captains at the annual team banquet at the Harvard Club of Boston last night.
Morden and Callow will take over for graduating seniors Mason Langenbrunner and Joe Miller as captains of the Crimson next season, becoming the 142nd and 143rd captains in program history.
Morden had a career season on the blue line this year for the Crimson, recording 20 points—shattering his previous career best of six points from his sophomore year. He scored four goals and added 16 assists on his way to being named to the All-ECAC Third Team and All-Ivy First Team.
Tripling his point total from his sophomore year, Morden recorded points in consecutive games six different times this season. In conference play, he tallied three goals and 10 assists in 22 games. Second on the team in points, Morden also recorded three multi-point Ivy League games this season, including a three-point performance against Princeton on Feb. 27.
Morden has played in 97 career games and will become the 45th defenseman in the last 46 seasons to skate in 100+ career games early next season. The Burlington, Ontario native was taken in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes (now the Utah Mammoth).
Callow, a native of South Boston, Massachusetts, was limited to just 16 games this season but returned to the lineup regularly in early February. Down the stretch, he recorded points in seven of the final eight games, including three points in four playoff games. Callow scored perhaps the biggest goal of the season for the Crimson, tying the game late in the opening-round matchup with St. Lawrence to send it to overtime.
Callow has played in 78 career games and has recorded nine goals and 22 assists to date. Appearing in all 32 games during his rookie season, he scored three goals and 12 assists in his best season in Cambridge so far. Callow was taken in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the Anaheim Ducks—just three spots behind Morden.
In addition to naming the new captains, the team also presented its end-of-season awards and honored the graduating senior class.
Seniors Casey Severo and Marek Hejduk received the Ralph "Cooney" Weiland Award, given to the Harvard hockey player(s) whose devotion to the game is exemplified through aggressive and spirited play, as well as selfless contribution to team success.
Matthew Morden was awarded the John Tudor Memorial Cup, presented annually to the most valuable member of the team, not only for ability but also for sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork.
Chase Stefanek earned the Donald Angier Hockey Trophy, awarded to the player who shows the greatest overall improvement during the season.
First-year forward Heikki Ruohonen received the George Percy Award, given to a freshman who demonstrates enthusiasm, sportsmanship, team spirit, and loyalty.
Sophomore Evan Zhang was honored with the 2023 Alford-Brown Faculty Fellow Prize. Named after current faculty fellows Tim Brown and Bill Alford, this award recognizes a student-athlete for contributions to Harvard Hockey and the broader Harvard community through academic achievement, selfless commitment to the team, independent habits of mind, and dedication to community service.
