LUCERNE, Switzerland – Six
Harvard/Radcliffe rowers completed at the Rowing World Cup on the
Rotsee. Malcolm Howard '05, Esther Lofgren '09 and
Cameron Winklevoss '04 brought home medals in their
respective races.
Lofgren and the U.S. women's eight finished second behind
Romania and ahead of the Netherlands in the only heat of the event.
Lofgren sat in the three seat of the U.S boat that maintained its
second-place position throughout the race. The Netherlands closed
in on the American crew but was unable to catch them as the U.S.
clocked in at 6:13.18.
Howard earned a silver medal in the men's eight as the five
seat in the Canadian entry. Canada won its trial heat to earn a
spot in the A level final. Germany won the gold medal with a time
of 5:33.56, followed by Canada in 5:36.09 and the Netherlands in
5:37.99.
Winklevoss won bronze in the men's four. The Americans
finished second in the first heat of the event to advance directly
to the A level final. The USA boat, which stood in fifth at the
first 500 meters, made up ground over the next 1,000 meters and,
along with Slovenia, passed Germany to earn a spot on the medal
stand. Germany won gold.
Henrik Rummel '09 sat in the six seat of the U.S.
men's eight. The boat finished third in the first heat,
getting beat out by Italy at the line. In the repechage, the
Italians again robbed the Americans, finishing a one-hundredth of a
second ahead of the Americans, putting the US boat in the B final.
The U.S. boat won the B final by 2.79 seconds.
Rising-senior Martin Eiermann and Mortiz Hafner '09 finished
second in the B final of the men's lightweight pair. The
twosome, competing for Germany, rowed a very tight final race
against another pair from Germany. Eiermann and Hafner battled back
and forth down the 2,000-meter course and held a .02- second lead
at the 1,500-meter mark but were edged by the duo of Ross Hunter
and Oliver Mahony by .01 of a second.
Two other Harvard rowers will compete this summer in the 2009 FISA
U23 World Championships August 5-8 in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France.
Rising seniors Richard Anderson and Jeff Overington will represent
Canada in the men's eight and the lightweight men's
four, respectively.
