CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Wendy Wilbur,
former assistant coach at Boston College, has joined the Radcliffe
heavyweight crew staff as the Black and White's coaching assistant,
head coach Liz O'Leary announced Tuesday.
Wilbur served as the novice and assistant varsity coach for the
Eagles. During her four seasons at BC, she coordinated
recruiting and successfully brought a number of walk-on and
experienced freshman athletes up to the varsity level in their
novice year. She also led the Eagles to some of their highest
finishes in both the ACC Championships and Eastern Sprints and
helped the program move into the new Harry Parker Boathouse.
She has also worked with the USRowing Under 23 Development Camp
in Boston for the last three years and has helped develop and coach
the Junior B Sculling Camp at Saratoga Rowing Association. Wilbur
has also coached at the high school level, working the Charles
River Rowing Camps and the Northeast Rowing Camps for several years
running.
Prior to her coaching career, Wilbur trained with the U.S. National
Team between 1997 and 2004. She won gold at the 2003 World
Championships, rowing in the four alongside Radcliffe Alum Caryn
Davies '05. She finished with a silver medal in the eight at
the World Championships in 1998 and a bronze medal in the four at
the World Championships a year later. In addition to these
medals, Wilbur finished sixth in 1997 in the eight, fifth in 2000
in the fourth, fourth in 2001 in the eight and fifth in 2002 in the
four, all at World Championships regattas.
Wilbur has won the Head of the Charles twice, in the
championship double in 1999, and in the championship eight in
2001. She has also competed many times in the C.R.A.S.H.-B.
Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships, finishing sixth in 1996
and fourth in 1997 in the international open women's final.
Wilbur attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where
she competed in the inaugural NCAA Championships in 1997, finishing
second. She double-majored in communication and sociology and
went on to earn a master's degree in labor studies from
UMass. She is currently working on a master's in
administrative studies at Boston College.
