PRINCETON, N.J. -- Mike Katzer scored four goals to lift
the Harvard men's water polo team to its first victory of the
season, a 12-7 win over George Washington at the Princeton
Invitational Saturday at DeNunzio Pool.
The Crimson jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first eight minutes
of play and never looked back, holding a 6-3 advantage at half
time. Harvard scored multiple transition goals in the third
quarter to hold off the Colonials. "It was a solid effort all
around," noted Harvard head coach Erik Farrar.
Katzer tallied four scores on only five shots, while Alex Thompson
and Jeff Lee each netted two goals. The Crimson also added
goals by Egen Atkinson, Max Eliot, Luka Babic and Evan
Zepfel. Between the pipes, Alexandre Popp made eight saves,
keeping Harvard ahead throughout the contest.
Later in the day, Harvard fell to No. 11 Princeton by a score of
16-8. Nikhil Balaraman was strong in net, making 13 saves
against the Tigers. Atkinson netted three goals, while Bret
Voith and Thompson had two apiece. Katzer rounded out the
Crimson scoring with a goal.
Harvard (1-4) will play two games Sunday, as the team will meet
No. 16 Santa Clara at 9:15 a.m. and Fordham at 2:15 p.m.
