CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Zac Ranta and Michael
Stanton swept the diving events and four different Harvard swimmers
won individual races to help the Crimson men's swimming and
diving team earn a 127-116 victory over Ivy League rival Brown
Friday afternoon at Blodgett Pool. With the win, Harvard improves
to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in Ancient Eight meets, while the Bears fall
to 2-5 and 1-2 in conference action.
On the boards, Stanton amassed a score of 304.88 to claim the
one-meter diving competition, beating out Brown's C.J. Kambe
(302.55). Ranta placed third with 282.68 points, before winning the
three-meter by scoring 331.88. Stanton finished second on the
three-meter board with 313.28. Mason Brunnick guided Harvard to the
top four places in the 1,000 freestyle, as he posted a meet-best
time of 9:32.27, almost six seconds ahead of Greg Roop (9:38.36),
who was second. Matthew Kaminske (9:45.68) and Jamie Mannion
(9:47.77) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Nicholas Tan and Will Heyburn cruised by the competition in the
100 freestyle, as Tan captured the race in 46.49, while Heyburn
earned second in 46.63. Harvard also picked up a victory in the 500
freestyle, as Alex Meyer grabbed the wall in 4:36.63, followed by a
second-place finish by Blake Lewkowitz (4:43.25). In the final
individual race of the afternoon, Owen Wurzbacher gave Harvard the
lead with a first-place showing in the 100 breaststroke
(57.33).
In the 200 freestyle, Brendan McIntee (1:44.74) nearly won the
race, falling just 0.05 behind Brown's James Hunter for
second. Tan followed with a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle
in 21.59, while Meyer was second in the 400 IM, touching the wall
in 4:06.34. In the 100 butterfly, Niall Janney swam the best mark
of Harvard swimmers in the race, posting a time of 50.79 for
second. Robert Newell completed the 100 backstroke in second place
with a mark of 51.79.
In the relay events, Harvard scored a second-place finish in the
200 medley relay, as Newell, Wurzbacher, Tan, and Rick McKellar
combined for a mark of 1:34.67. The Crimson “B”
foursome of Greg Pelton, Simone Melillo, Ross Ford and Will Heyburn
placed third in 1:35.59, while David Lynch, Justin Davidson, Eric
Taylor and McIntee were fourth in 1:36.62. The Crimson also took
second in the 200 freestyle relay, as Tan, Janney, Heyburn and
McKellar completed the race in 1:25.03.
Harvard hosts local rival Boston University Saturday at 3 p.m.
