CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Harvard lightweight
crew started off the 2010-11 season by showcasing its depth with
two boats among the top four finishers in the men's lightweight
eights event at the 46th Head Of The Charles Regatta Sunday on the
Charles River.
The Harvard A entry placed third among 21 men's lightweight
eights, while the Harvard B boat was one place and less than seven
seconds back. A boat of Crimson freshmen placed 17th in the event.
Harvard placed ninth of 19 in the lightweight fours and took 25th
place against heavyweight competition in the 42-boat club eights
event Saturday.
The strong team showing, combined with that of the Crimson
heavyweight crew, enabled Harvard to claim the MacMahon Cup Regatta
Point Trophy for the most total points by any club, school, college
or university at the Head Of The Charles.
"We had a very good result in the eight," said head coach
Charley Butt. "The A boat rowed very well and very fast, and then
the B boat really stepped up and had an outstanding row. We're
rowing well enough and we're strong enough to be competitive, but
that doesn't take anything away from the fact that we have to keep
improving."
Harvard's A eight, which contained several members of last
season's varsity eight, finished the three-mile course in
14:24.146, about 1.3 seconds behind runner-up Cornell, while
Princeton took first place. The Crimson's B entry crossed the
finish in 14:30.849, three places ahead of Princeton's second boat
and further ahead of entries from Georgetown, Yale, Navy and
others.
