CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's
soccer team rolled to its third straight victory, as the Crimson
shut down Cornell, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Ohiri Field.
Lindsey Kowal and Kerry Kartsonis
supplied the offense for Harvard with a goal apiece, while Jessica Wright
recorded a shutout while making three saves.
With the victory, Harvard improves to 5-4-1 overall on the season
and 2-1 in Ancient Eight play, while the Big Red fall to 0-3-0 in
conference action and 5-6-0 overall.
In the 18th minute, Kowal took a free kick from a tough angle on
the right side. Kowal struck the ball and the shot made its
way through the Big Red defense and inside the far post, making it
1-0 in favor of the Crimson at 17:32. Less than nine minutes
later, Harvard doubled its lead when Alexandra
Conigliaro placed a corner kick to the far post and Kartsonis
headed it home for the Crimson's second goal at 25:00.
In the second half, Wright made all three of her saves, as the
Crimson outshot the Big Red, 16-8, in the final 45 minutes to hold
on for the victory. Harvard owned the final count in shots,
22-14, and had a sizable advantage in corner kicks, 11-7.
During halftime of the game, Harvard honored from captain Meg
Berte Owen '94, who passed away from lung disease brought on from
an earlier battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Meg's teammates,
teammates, together with family and friends, have raised close to
$40,000 to endow The Meg Berte Owen '94 Memorial Award, which will
be given annually to the soccer player that best exemplifies Meg's
leadership, work ethic, passion, courage, and sheer determination
both on and off the playing field.
