PRINCETON, N.J.-The Harvard men's hockey team
scored four goals in a 10-minute span during the third period to
rally to a 4-2 win against Princeton in the opening game of an ECAC
Hockey first-round playoff series Friday night at Baker Rink.
Daniel Moriarty, Danny Biega, Michael Del Mauro and Michael
Biega scored to bring Harvard (8-19-3) back from a 2-0 third-period
deficit. Kyle Richter made 33 saves to outduel Princeton's Zane
Kalemba in a matchup of the last two Dryden Award-winners.
After Moriarty and Danny Biega tied the game, Del Mauro, a New
Jersey native, scored from the left side at 14:05 of the third
period after Jack Christian got the puck from Ryan Grimshaw and had
his point shot blocked. Less than three minutes passed before
Michael Biega scored on the rush after brother Alex got the puck to
Louis Leblanc, who dished to Michael Biega at the offensive blue
line.
Each team had 35 shots in the game, with Harvard holding a 15-10
edge in the final period. Doug Rogers had a 16-6 faceoff record as
the Crimson went 44-32 as a team.
The game's first seven minutes were played virtually entirely in
Princeton's zone, with the Crimson's best chances coming when
Rogers forced a turnover and a Kalemba save on the first shift and
Michael Biega tipped a point shot just wide on the power play. The
Tigers, however, claimed the lead at 15:27 of the first period,
when Marc Hagel deflected home a point shot from Matt Godlewski.
Princeton (12-15-3) took the 1-0 edge and a 12-8 shots
advantage to the first intermission.
The Tigers nearly doubled their advantage on a power play in the
opening minute of the second period, but Richter extended his left
leg to make an outstanding toe save on Mark Magnowski's point-blank
shot. The Crimson had a near miss of its own when the goal light
came on following an Alex Killorn shot, but the referee ruled the
puck hit the post. Instead, Magnowski made it 2-0 by banking in a
shot off Richter's back after Alex Biega had broken up a two-on-one
break. Princeton outshot Harvard, 13-12, in the period.
Harvard broke through at 8:05 of the third period. Moriarty
caused a turnover at the offensive blue line and then crashed the
net to put in the rebound of a Pier-Olivier Michaud shot with Conor
Morrison also assisting. Danny Biega tied the score less than three
minutes later, putting the puck between the legs of Kalemba after
Chris Huxley chipped the puck ahead and Luke Greiner slipped it
ahead to Biega in the neutral zone.
