ORLANDO, Fla. – The Harvard softball team dropped
two games in its second day of action at the season-opening UCF
Invitational, falling to Providence, 3-1, and the College of
Charleston, 1-0. Harvard moves to 1-3 on the season with the pair
of losses.
Against the Friars, Harvard took an early 1-0 lead in the second
inning, taking advantage of a hit and an error. Jess Pledger
reached base on an error to start the inning and pinch-runner Eve
Rosenbaum advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch.
Stephanie Krysiak drove a two-out single up the middle to score
Rosenbaum and give Harvard an early 1-0 lead. Providence came back
with two runs in the fourth, and capped the 3-1 win with an
insurance run in the sixth. Krysiak finished the game with two hits
and an RBI, while Ellen Macadam, Melissa Schellberg and Jane
Alexander all picked up hits. Julia Moore threw four innings and
allowed just one hit in the loss.
The College of Charleston plated a run in the top of the first in
game two and held on for a 1-0 victory. Jessica Ferri threw 6.1
innings on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out two
in the loss. Schellberg, Alexander and Whitney Shaw had hits for
the Crimson.
Harvard wraps up its stay in Orlando tomorrow as it takes on Boston
College in its final game at the UCF Invitational. First pitch is
slated for 11 a.m.
