Last Weekend
The Crimson (5-0) defeated four top-10 teams in two regattas
separated by one day and more than 300 miles. On Saturday in
Ithaca, N.Y., Harvard won four of five races against No. 6 Cornell
and No. 8 Penn. The varsity eight won by 11 seconds, while the
second varsity eight and both freshman eights registered victories.
Harvard returned home to sweep five races from No. 5 Georgetown
and No. 9 Saint Joseph's. The varsity eight beat the second-place
Hoyas by 5.7 seconds and finished 32 seconds ahead of the Hawks.
The other Crimson boats cruised to wins by more than 11 seconds
each.
History Lesson
Harvard finished more than 12 seconds ahead of the rest of the
varsity eight field as part of a four-race sweep of the Big Green
and Engineers last season on the Charles River. The Dartmouth
varsity edged MIT by just six-tenths of a second for second place.
Last season's win was Harvard's 46th in the 55-year history of
the Biglin Bowl regatta. MIT won the inaugural race and has
captured the trophy four other times since. Dartmouth has four
titles and has alternated wins with Harvard over the last four
years.
Cambridge,
Mass. ??? It was a clean sweep for the Harvard lightweight rowers
Saturday morning against Dartmouth and MIT. The second-ranked
varsity eight continued to dominate its opponents as it earned a
12.1-second win over the Big Green to bring the Biglin Bowl back to
Newell Boathouse.
The
varsity eight improved to 6-0 on the season after pulling away from
its competition early. The Crimson led by a length before the
halfway point and continued to move away as the race continued. MIT
made movement on Dartmouth in the second half of the race to pull
within a few seats at the finish. Harvard completed the 2,000 meter
course in 5:57.4, followed by Dartmouth in 6:09.5 and MIT in
6:10.1.
Harvard's
second varsity eight recorded an 8.8-second victory over the Big
Green. Like the varsity eight, the 2V led from start to finish and
never looked back. The Crimson clocked in at 6:19.3, while
Dartmouth recorded a time of 6:28.1.
In
the first race of the morning for the Crimson, the freshman eight
set the tone for the regatta, with a strong, clean race. Harvard
and Dartmouth pulled away from MIT early and then the Crimson
continued its push to the finish moving ahead of the Big Green. The
Crimson led the entire race en route to a 6:08.8 finish. Dartmouth
clocked in at 6:13.5, while MIT rowed a 6:25.0.
The
Crimson's second freshman and third freshman finished 1-2 in their
race against the Big Green. Harvard easily won the varsity four
race, completing the course in 7:08.6. MIT followed in 7:16.2 and
Dartmouth finished in 7:37.0 after suffering a crab with 1,400
meters to go.
The
lightweights remain at home for its second and final dual race on
the Charles River next Saturday. The Crimson takes on Navy for the
Haines Cup beginning at 7:12 a.m.
