Last Time Out
The Crimson took advantage of a perfect early-April Saturday on
the Charles River to get its season off to winning start against
Delaware. Harvard swept four races against the Blue Hens, with the
varsity eight pulling away to a 9.4-second victory and both the
second and third varsities beating Delaware's second varsity.
Last Season
The Harvard varsity eight cruised to a nine-second win against the
Big Red and Quakers in Philadelphia. The Crimson freshman eight
also won, but Cornell claimed victory in the second and third
varsity and second freshman events.
Hours after taking on Cornell and Penn, Harvard swept five races
in its dual regatta against Georgetown and Columbia on Lake
Carnegie. The Hoyas finished second to the Crimson in each race,
trailing by four seconds in varsity eight.
Harvard finished ahead of Cornell and Georgetown in both of its
varsity races at 2009 Eastern Sprints, with the runner-up Crimson
varsity eight placing one spot (4.4 seconds) ahead of Georgetown
and four places (6.2 seconds) ahead of Cornell. The Big Red won
gold in the freshman eight, while Harvard took second place and
Georgetown was fifth.
The Crimson varsity finished third at the IRA National
Championships, with Georgetown fourth and Cornell fifth, each more
than three seconds back of Harvard.
Series Histories
Harvard leads its all-time series against Cornell, 19-7, but had
lost two straight dual races to the Big Red before last
year's win. The Crimson owns a 17-regatta win streak against
Penn and is 23-4 all-time against the Quakers. Harvard is 4-3
against Georgetown, and the teams have alternated wins since 2001.
Scouting the Opposition
Cornell (1-0) opened the season by sweeping its races against
heavyweight opposition at the Ithaca Invitational, including a
varsity win against Virginia. Penn (3-1) began by beating Delaware
and Marietta at home. Last week, the Quakers finished second
against Dartmouth and MIT, two seconds behind the Big Green and
five ahead of the Engineers.
Georgetown (1-1) crossed the finish about four seconds behind
top-ranked Princeton and one second ahead of Columbia in its only
action thus far. Saint Joseph's (0-1) lost to Penn State at
last weekend's Murphy Cup, finishing 6.49 seconds back of the
Nittany Lions. The Hawks also previously took first place in the
Jesuit Invitational, topping heavyweight squads from their own
school, Boston College and Loyola.
