PRINCETON, N.J.—The No. 2 Harvard
lightweight varsity eight came from behind to defeat top-ranked
Princeton and beat No. 4 Yale by nearly 12 seconds to complete the
27th perfect dual-racing record in program history and claim the
Goldthwait Cup Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie.
The Crimson freshman eight also rallied past the Tigers to
complete a perfect dual campaign at 10-0 and help Harvard win the
Vogel Cup team competition. The Crimson finished with 37 team
points, 10 more than Princeton. The Goldthwait win was Harvard's
41st, compared to 25 for Princeton and 19 for Yale, and the
unbeaten varsity mark was the Crimson's first since its Eastern and
national championship season of 1997.
“All year long, we've been very steady; we've had steady
speed throughout the course,” said Crimson head coach Charley
Butt. “That's what we did today. We couldn't be happier with
the season and how the athletes are responding to the challenges.
They've had luck, and they've made luck. I couldn't be more proud
of the way they conducted themselves under pressure in competition
and how they have performed all spring.”
Harvard next races for Ivy League and Eastern titles at the
Eastern Sprints regatta May 16.
The Crimson trailed by as much as three to four seats but
gradually pulled level before using a strong finish to win by
seven-tenths of a second. Harvard finished in 5:40.7, while
Princeton crossed the line in 5:41.4, followed by Yale in 5:52.6.
The top freshman race followed a similar storyline. The Tigers
led for 1,200 meters before Harvard rowed through and eventually
notched a 3.5-second win in 5:53.0. The Crimson beat Yale by 8.7
seconds. Princeton won the second varsity eight in 5:46.9, followed
by Yale and Harvard.
Harvard placed second in the third varsity and second freshman
races, both of which were won by Yale. The Bulldogs topped the
Crimson second varsity by 3.3 seconds in 6:03.1. The Harvard second
freshman eight's time of 6:24.4 was 5.2 seconds off Yale's pace.
