HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England — The Harvard men's lightweight rowing team continued its impressive run at the Henley Royal Regatta, advancing to the semi-final round of the prestigious Temple Challenge Cup after a commanding win over the University of Virginia on Friday, July 4. The Crimson will return to the water on Saturday to face Amsterdam-based A.S.R. Nereus, one of the top international lightweight clubs, at 5:36 a.m. EST (10:36 a.m. BST).
Sibling Rivalry on the Thames
Friday's race carried an added layer of emotion and significance for Harvard's coxswain,
Anya Cheng, who lined up against a familiar face: her younger sister, the coxswain for the Virginia boat. It marked the first time the two have competed against each other in their collegiate careers, and the race drew attention for the rare sibling rivalry playing out on one of rowing's most storied courses.
Unfazed by the moment, Harvard jumped out to a strong start and established an early lead within the first 500 meters. The crew maintained their composure and rhythm through the middle of the course, never relinquishing their advantage. By the finish line, Harvard had opened up a margin of one and a quarter boat lengths, clinching their third consecutive victory at this year's Regatta and solidifying their place among the tournament's top contenders.
Varsity A Boat Lineup
With one race standing between them and the final, the Crimson will now turn their attention to Nereus — a formidable opponent with a strong international pedigree. A win on Saturday would place Harvard in the Temple Challenge Cup final and bring them one step closer to a coveted Henley title.
