Collin Zych was named the Ivy League preseason Defensive
Player of the Year by Lindy's.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –
Lindy's Football Magazine has tabbed Harvard as its 2010
preseason favorite to win the Ivy League. The magazine has also
tabbed senior free safety Collin Zych as the league's
Defensive Player of the Year.
Previously, Zych had been named to the Consensus Draft Services
Preseason Football All-America team. Harvard has had at least one
All-American in each of the last 11 years while posting the
nation's best winning percentage this decade.
Lindy's predicted order of finish in 2010 is:
1. Harvard
2. Penn
3. Yale
4. Brown
5. Columbia
6. Dartmouth
7. Princeton
8. Cornell
Zych was commonly referred to as Harvard's best football player
by Murphy at media sessions throughout the 2009 season as he earned
team MVP honor s as well as first team All-Ivy League status. Zych,
who will serve as Harvard's 137th captain in 2010,
led the Ivy League in pass breakups (12) and passes defended (14)
while ranking third in the league in solo tackles with 53 - more
than double the next closest Harvard defender. His 73 total tackles
led the Crimson and he tied for second on the team as well with six
tackles for a loss.
During the past decade (2000-09), Harvard posted the second
highest winning percentage in the Football Championship Subdivision
and seventh highest in all of Division I.
Over the past six seasons, Harvard is 48-12. Harvard is 39-8 at
Harvard Stadium dating back to 2001 while winning 18 of its last 20
games there.
The Crimson has registered at least seven wins in each of the
last nine years, making Harvard the first team in the history of
Ivy League football to post such a string of successful seasons. In
2007, Harvard became the first Ivy team to post a string of seven
such seasons together. The current stretch is the Crimson's
best nine-year run since a 28-year streak of seven-plus win seasons
came to an end in 1911.
