MADISON, Wis.—Senior Liz Powers was the
recipient of the Robert M. Hobbs Trophy, the top award for
sportsmanship in all of college sailing, and junior Alan Palmer
received All-America honorable mention at the Inter-Collegiate
Sailing Association's national banquet Thursday night.
The banquet wrapped up the 2010 ICSA Spring Nationals, hosted by
Wisconsin on Lake Mendota. The 10-day event saw team captain Powers
and the Harvard women's team place seventh, while captain
Palmer led the coed squad to a runner-up national finish.
The Hobbs Trophy was the second-to-last award of the evening and
was presented to Powers for the positive attitude she brings to
competition and her positive influence on teammates and
competitors. It is the culmination of a season in which Powers
earned All-New England honors and was named the New England
Intercollegiate Sailing Association Sportsman of the Year.
“She is one of the most positive, happy people
you'll ever meet, and she's part of what makes college
sailing fun,” says Crimson head coach Mike O'Connor.
“It's a matter of the manner in which she conducts
herself every minute of her life. When she gets out of a van and
walks into a facility for a regatta, everybody smiles.”
The award takes into account the consistent show of
sportsmanship across a season. Competing at a high level on the
race course and starting for a successful Harvard squad, Powers had
many opportunities to display great sportsmanship. The Wellesley,
Mass., native was a continual uplifting force for teammates and
competitors.
Powers was not in attendance for the awards ceremony but
received a standing ovation. Adam Werblow, head coach of St.
Mary's and chairman of the ICSA awards committee, told the
crowd, “As anybody who has ever hosted Liz for a regatta,
anybody who's ever sailed against her, anybody who's
ever coached against her, anybody who's ever had anything to
do with Liz Powers can attest, Liz is a deserving recipient.”
Palmer completed an outstanding season by leading the Crimson to
its highest national coed dinghy finish since 2003 and its first
podium appearance since 2006. He sailed Harvard to a third-place
finish in the A division in the championship regatta.
The Yarmouth, Maine native was previously named a second-team
All-New England skipper. He and crew Meghan Wareham paced Harvard
with a fourth-place finish in the A division at the ICSA semis,
winning three races. They finished fifth in the A division at the
New England Coed Dinghy Championship.
